Weekly Recap: Dark Web Numbers, AI Flaws, and Your Password Check
It's Sunday, so we're looking back at the week in scams and security. Here's what you need to know, without the jargon.
Dark web numbers
Our partners at DarkWatch tracked 22,214 captures this week, across 11,775 entities. That produced 1,806 alerts and 11 active targets. Those active targets are organisations being watched or attacked right now. If you're a normal household, you're not one of them. But it's a reminder that ransomware crews like DragonForce are still posting stolen data on active dark web leak sites when they don't get paid.
AI finds flaws
Researchers used a new AI model, Claude Opus 5, to find chained flaws that let them take over OpenAI staff accounts. They reported the issues and they were fixed. This shows AI can help find problems faster, but it also means attackers might use similar tools. The lesson for you: use strong, unique passwords and turn on two factor authentication everywhere.
What else happened
We covered a deep read on UK fraud networks, a paper showing voice clones need just three seconds of audio, and Microsoft fixes. Plus guides on fake parcel texts and what to do in the first hour after a scam. All on our site.
Next week
Patch Tuesday is coming, with critical fixes from Microsoft. Install updates as soon as they're available.
One thing to do today
Take five minutes to check your email and banking accounts. Make sure they have a strong, unique password and two factor authentication turned on. That's the single best thing you can do to protect yourself.
