📈 Investment Scam Red Flags UK — Spot Fake Schemes Before You Lose Money

Sunday, 02 August 2026

Investment scams are among the most expensive frauds in the UK — victims lose an average of tens of thousands of pounds. Fake trading platforms, Ponzi schemes, and "guaranteed return" crypto cons are everywhere, often promoted through social media ads.

The good news: almost every investment scam has the same red flags. Learn these and you can walk away before it's too late.

The most common investment scams

Scam How it works
Fake trading platform A slick app/website showing profits — but withdrawals "never process"
Ponzi scheme Early investors paid with new investors' money until it collapses
Crypto cons Fake coins, "guaranteed" staking, celebrity-endorsed tokens (deepfaked)
Binary options / CFDs High-pressure trading "deals" that always lose
Boiler room calls Cold calls pushing "once in a lifetime" shares
Land / wine / forestry Illiquid assets with fake valuations
Recovery room "We'll get your lost money back" — for a fee (a second scam)

The red flags — check these first

  • ⚠️ "Guaranteed" returns — no legitimate investment guarantees profits. Guarantee = scam
  • ⚠️ Pressure to act fast — "offer closes today", "only 10 places left"
  • ⚠️ Unsolicited contact — cold calls, WhatsApp, Telegram, social media DMs
  • ⚠️ Unrealistic returns — 10%+ monthly, "doubling your money"
  • ⚠️ No FCA authorisation — the firm isn't on the FCA register
  • ⚠️ Hard to withdraw — profits look great but you can't take money out
  • ⚠️ They ask for more — "pay tax to release funds", "minimum balance to withdraw"
  • ⚠️ Celebrity endorsements — often deepfaked videos of famous people
  • ⚠️ Crypto-only payments — hard to trace, impossible to reverse

⚠️ The golden rules: (1) Never invest based on a cold call or social media advert. (2) Never invest in something promising "guaranteed" or "high" returns. (3) Always check the FCA register before sending a penny.

How to check an investment firm

  1. Check the FCA register — register.fca.org.uk. Search the firm name. Is it authorised? For what activities?
  2. Check the warning list — the FCA publishes a list of unauthorised firms and clone firms at fca.org.uk/consumers/warning-list
  3. Search for reviews — "company name scam" and read recent results
  4. Check the domain — when was the website registered? New domains are a red flag
  5. Verify the phone number — boiler rooms use non-UK numbers or numbers matching real firms
  6. Ask for documents — real firms give you a prospectus, risk warnings, and a named contact

If the firm is not FCA-authorised, it is illegal for them to offer you investment services in the UK. Walk away.

The "withdrawal" trap

This is how victims get drained repeatedly:

  1. You invest, and the platform shows a profit
  2. You try to withdraw — it "fails" or requires a "minimum balance"
  3. They ask for more: "tax", "verification fees", "anti-money-laundering deposits"
  4. Every payment "unlocks" the withdrawal — but it never arrives
  5. Eventually they vanish with everything

Rule: a legitimate platform lets you withdraw freely. Any fee to withdraw is a scam.

What to do if you've invested

  1. Stop paying immediately — do NOT send "fees" to unlock withdrawals
  2. Contact your bank — tell them it's an investment scam; see how to get your money back after a scam
  3. Report to Action Fraud — 0300 123 2040 or actionfraud.police.uk
  4. Report to the FCA — fca.org.uk/consumers/report-scam
  5. Get a crime reference number — see our guide
  6. Beware recovery rooms — anyone offering to recover your money for an upfront fee is a second scammer

Protect yourself

  • Never invest on impulse — legitimate opportunities wait
  • Only use FCA-authorised firms — check the register first
  • Talk to an independent adviser — not one recommended by the caller
  • Be sceptical of social media ads — especially crypto and "passive income"
  • Start small — and only with money you can afford to lose
  • ❌ Never pay "fees" to withdraw
  • ❌ Never invest because of a deadline or "limited places"
  • ❌ Never send crypto to a "platform" you can't verify
