Crash for Cash — The Staged Accident

A fraudster deliberately causes a collision by slamming on their brakes, pulling out in front of you, or reversing into you. They then claim for damage, injuries, and whiplash — often with fake passengers who never existed. You are left with higher premiums, a fault claim on your record, and potential legal costs.

Red flags: Driver brakes suddenly for no reason • Overly friendly at the scene • Insists on using their own repair shop • Passengers appear from nowhere • They already have a solicitor on speed dial

Your Best Defence: A Dashcam

A dashcam (car camera) is the single most effective way to protect yourself against insurance fraud. It records everything — the car in front, the car behind, your speed, and the moment of impact. Insurance companies love dashcam footage. A crash for cash claim usually collapses the moment the fraudster finds out you have a camera.

✅ Dashcam Tips
  • Get a front & rear camera — crash for cash can happen from behind too (someone reversing into you)
  • Good quality matters — cheap £20 cameras may not capture number plates. Spend £80-150 for something reliable (Nextbase, Garmin, Viofo)
  • Hardwire it — battery-powered cams run out when you need them most. Hardwire to your fuse box for always-on recording
  • Save footage immediately — if you have an incident, copy the footage to your phone or cloud before someone can steal the camera or SD card
  • Tell your insurer — some insurers give a discount for having a dashcam (5-15% off premium)

⚠ Other Insurance Scams to Know

🎭
Ghost Broking

Fake insurance policies sold on social media. Looks real, isn't. You only find out when you make a claim. Check the FCA register before buying.

🚑
Exaggerated Claims

Minor bump becomes "life-changing whiplash." Fraudsters claim for injuries they never had, with fake medical reports from corrupt clinics.

🔥
Staged Theft

Car is hidden, reported stolen, and owner claims insurance. Often exported within 48 hours. Insurers are wise to this — expect detailed questioning.

🏠
Home Insurance Fraud

Fake burglaries, exaggerated losses, claiming for items that never existed. Insurers now check social media for photos of items you claim you owned.

🛡 What to Do at the Scene

  • 1. Stay calm and do not admit fault — even saying "sorry" can be used against you. Exchange details only.
  • 2. Take photos of everything — both cars, number plates, damage, location, road conditions, the other driver, any passengers.
  • 3. Get witness details — if other drivers stopped, get their contact info. If someone offers to be a witness, be cautious — they might be in on it.
  • 4. Save your dashcam footage — immediately copy it to your phone or cloud. The SD card can be stolen if you leave the camera in the car.
  • 5. Report to the insurance fraud bureau — if you suspect crash for cash, report it to the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) anonymously.
  • 6. Report to the police — insurance fraud is a crime. Get a crime reference number via 101 or Action Fraud.
