Crypto & Investment Scams

Fake exchanges, cloned wallets, deepfake celebrity endorsements, and pig butchering. Crypto scammers use every trick to separate you from your digital assets. Once your crypto is gone, it is almost impossible to get back. Understanding how they operate is your only defence.

🔐 Seed Phrase Scams — The Biggest Risk

Your crypto wallet seed phrase (12 or 24 words) is the master key to your crypto. If someone gets it, they can drain your wallet from anywhere in the world. Scammers create fake websites that look exactly like MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Ledger, or Coinbase. They trick you into entering your seed phrase. Once you do, your crypto is gone in seconds.

Golden rule: NEVER enter your seed phrase into any website, app, or pop-up. No legitimate service will ever ask for it. Not MetaMask. Not Ledger. Not anyone. Your seed phrase exists only on paper or a hardware device. Type it anywhere else and you are being scammed.

🐷 Pig Butchering — Long-Term Crypto Romance

This is a combination of romance scam and crypto scam. The scammer builds a relationship with you over weeks or months (the "fattening"). Then they introduce the idea of crypto investment. They show you fake returns. They encourage you to invest more. When you try to withdraw, they demand more fees. Eventually they disappear with everything.

  • Only use regulated UK exchanges like Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance (FCA registered).
  • Beware of "investment groups" on WhatsApp and Telegram promising guaranteed returns.
  • If someone you met online asks you to invest in crypto, it is a scam. Every time.

🎭 Deepfake Celebrity Endorsements

AI-generated videos of Elon Musk, Martin Lewis, or other celebrities "endorsing" a crypto scheme. These look real. They sound like the person. They are entirely fake. The video directs you to a scam website where you "invest" — and lose everything.

No legitimate celebrity endorses crypto investments. If you see a video of a famous person promoting a crypto scheme, it is AI-generated. Report it immediately.

🛡 How to Protect Yourself

  • 🔴 NEVER share your seed phrase. Not with anyone. Not for any reason.
  • 🔴 Only download wallet apps from the official App Store or Google Play. Check the developer name and review count.
  • 🔴 Verify URLs carefully. Scammers register domain names like meta-mask-login.com or ledger-wallet.co. Check the URL bar.
  • Use a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor) for large amounts. Keep seed phrase offline, written on paper, in a safe.
  • Report scams to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
