What is a missed-call (wangiri) scam? Scammers call once and hang up, hoping you call back. The return call is charged at a premium rate — and part of the money goes to the scammer. International numbers from countries like Pakistan, Ghana and Tanzania are frequently used.
What are premium-rate numbers? Numbers starting with 09 (and some 08/087/084) charge more than a standard call — often £1 per minute or more. Legitimate services use them, but they are also the favourite tool of phone scammers because they are hard to trace.
Someone called me from this number — should I call back? Only if you were expecting the call and can verify the number against the official website of the organisation. If in doubt, never call back — genuine companies leave messages and can be reached via their published switchboard number.
How do I report a scam phone number? Forward suspicious texts to 7726 (free) — it works on most UK networks and alerts your provider. You can also report to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk and to Ofcom for nuisance calls.
Can scammers fake any number? Yes — caller ID spoofing means the number you see may not be the real caller. That is why this checker looks at number TYPE and community reports rather than trusting the display alone. If someone claims to be your bank, hang up and call the number on the back of your card.
