Week in Review: Check Point Flaw and Docker Weekend Checklist

It's Friday, and that means it's time to look back at the week's security news and get ready for the weekend. Here are the three stories that mattered, explained without the jargon.

Check Point management flaw rated critical

Check Point makes security software used by businesses to manage their networks. This week, a critical flaw was disclosed in the management interface. If an attacker can reach that interface, they could run code as root — the highest level of access on the system.

Who does this affect? Mostly businesses and IT teams, not the average household. If you work somewhere with an IT department, it's worth asking whether the patch has been applied. If you run a small business, ring your IT supplier and check.

Docker sandbox flaw on macOS

Docker is a tool developers use to run software in isolated containers. On a Mac, a flaw meant that code running inside a container could read or change files on the Mac itself — the box wasn't properly sealed. Updates have been released to fix it.

Again, this is one for developers and tech teams. If you're not running Docker on a Mac, it doesn't affect you.

Self-rewriting AI agents

The security world is talking about AI agents that can rewrite their own code while they run. Most of this is still experimental, but it's a reminder that the tools attackers use are getting faster. For the rest of us, the basics matter more than ever: strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication.

Your weekend checklist

  1. Update your phone, laptop, and router.
  2. Check your bank and card alerts are switched on.
  3. Turn on two-factor authentication for your email — it's the key to everything else.

If you get a strange message this weekend, stop, check with the person or company using a number you already have, and report anything suspicious to Action Fraud.

For a fuller version of this routine, see our weekend prep guide. And if you manage IT or run GitLab, our weekend update checklist covers the patching side.

That's your ten-minute job for today: switch on two-factor authentication for your email. Have a good weekend.
