Week Ahead: Updates, ConnectWise and the Simple Steps That Protect Your Family

It's Monday, and that means we're looking at the week ahead. The first thing to clear up: Microsoft's monthly security update, often called Patch Tuesday, is not this week. It falls on the second Tuesday of November, which is the tenth. So rather than waiting, use this week to check that automatic updates are switched on for your phone, laptop and home router. That one job closes off a lot of known problems before they can be used against you.

The bigger story this week is ConnectWise. The company has suspended its cloud backup product after attackers used compromised credentials to sign in to Microsoft 365 tenants. This is a business tool, typically used by IT support companies, so most households won't own it directly. If you run a small business, or a family member does, the proportionate step is to ask your IT provider whether your cloud backups are affected and to review the sign-in history on your Microsoft 365 account.

DarkWatch logged 141,935 captures, 28,121 entities and 2,722 alerts this week, with nine active targets being tracked. In plain terms, stolen login details are still circulating. The practical answer is two-step verification on your main email account and a password manager so you're not reusing passwords across sites.

With half term on the way, children will be online more. Ten minutes spent checking privacy settings on their games and apps, and agreeing who they can talk to, is time well spent. As the weeks roll towards Christmas, expect more delivery and refund texts. Never click a link in a text about a missed parcel; go to the retailer's app or website yourself.

Your takeaway for the week: check your updates are automatic, and turn on two-step verification for your main email. Two small jobs, and you've made the easy attacks much harder.
