CyberAware UK, Monday 19 October: The Week Ahead, Without the Panic
Mondays are a good time to look ahead rather than back. So on today's episode we previewed the week, and the honest headline is: for most UK households, the practical job is the same as it always was. Updates, backups, and being careful with links.
Patch picture
We've already covered the weekend fixes on this show, so today we looked forward. Microsoft's main monthly Patch Tuesday is next month, but there are already-released fixes for some critical issues. The calm approach is simple: tonight, after dinner, update your phone, your laptop, and your router. Most people forget the router even has a login.
DarkWatch in numbers
Our monitoring feed, DarkWatch, is showing 2,725 active alerts across about 28,000 entities this week. That sounds dramatic. In practice, the majority of those alerts touch organisations, not family homes. The affected parties are the businesses running older software. For households, the reliable protections are two-step login on email, automatic updates, and a backup you've actually checked.
Subscription ransomware
One new signal today was a ransomware-as-a-subscription service starting up on the dark web. These services mostly target businesses. If you run a small shop or a home booking system, it's worth asking whoever supports your till or booking software whether it's receiving updates, and whether the backups have been tested. Tested is the key word. A backup you've never restored isn't a backup, it's a hope.
Onion addresses
We also noticed a privacy-focused search engine publishing its own onion address. That's a legitimate privacy tool, not a threat. We don't read out those addresses on the show, and we'd suggest you don't follow them from random sources either.
One action this week
Pick the two devices you'd be most upset to lose — usually your phone and your main laptop. Confirm automatic updates are on for both, and confirm a backup runs without you having to think about it. That single check covers most of what this week is likely to throw at you.
If something goes wrong, report it. Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, and forward suspicious texts to 7726.
